🇩🇪 Germany Net Salary Calculator 2026
The Grundfreibetrag (your personal tax-free threshold) is €12,348 in 2026. Above that, income tax starts at around 14% and rises progressively, hitting 42% for most high earners and 45% above €277,826. Four social contributions also come off your payslip each month: pension insurance (9.3%), health insurance (~8.75% with the average Zusatzbeitrag), unemployment (1.3%), and long-term care (1.8%). These are capped at €101,400 or €69,750 depending on the contribution, so very high earners pay a smaller share in percentage terms. Total social deductions typically run around 20% of gross.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Solidaritätszuschlag?
The Soli is a 5.5% surcharge on top of your income tax, originally brought in to fund German reunification. Since 2021 it only kicks in if your annual income tax bill exceeds €20,350, which means roughly 90% of employees don't pay it at all. This calculator includes it automatically when it applies.
What social contributions do employees pay in Germany?
Four contributions come off your payslip each month: 9.3% into the state pension (Rentenversicherung, cap €101,400), ~8.75% into health insurance (Krankenversicherung, cap €69,750), 1.3% into unemployment (Arbeitslosenversicherung, cap €101,400), and 1.8% into long-term care (Pflegeversicherung, cap €69,750). Your employer matches most of these. One exception: childless employees aged 23 and over pay an extra 0.6% long-term care surcharge.
Is church tax included?
No. Kirchensteuer (8–9% of your income tax, depending on your federal state) only applies to registered members of recognised churches. It's not included here because it varies by religion and state.
