Frequently Asked Questions
Does this include state income tax?
No. Only federal income tax and FICA are included. State rates vary widely: California tops out at 13.3%, New York at 10.9%, while Texas, Florida, Washington, and several others charge nothing. If you want a more complete number, add your state rate on top of what this calculator shows.
What is FICA?
FICA covers two taxes: Social Security at 6.2% on earnings up to $184,500, and Medicare at 1.45% on everything. You and your employer each pay equal shares, so the combined rate is 15.3%. If you're self-employed, you pay the full 15.3% yourself as self-employment tax.
Are 401(k) or HSA contributions deducted before tax?
Yes. Pre-tax 401(k) contributions (up to $23,500 in 2026) and HSA contributions reduce your taxable income, so your actual federal tax bill ends up lower than what this calculator shows. We start from gross salary, so those deductions aren't factored in.
