๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช Sweden Net Salary Calculator 2025

Sweden is known for high taxes, but the structure is simpler than most people expect. Employees pay no social contributions. Those are paid entirely by the employer as arbetsgivaravgifter (31.42% on top of gross). What you do pay is income tax: the average municipal rate is 32.37%, and once taxable income exceeds SEK 598,500 per year, a 20% state income tax (statlig inkomstskatt) is added on top of that. Your basic allowance (grundavdrag) of approximately SEK 36,000 means the first SEK 36,000 of income is tax-free. The effective rate for a typical Swedish employee earning SEK 400,000โ€“700,000 falls between 27% and 33%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Swedish employees pay any social contributions?

No. All social contributions are paid by the employer as arbetsgivaravgifter, 31.42% on top of your gross salary, covering state pension, health insurance, parental leave, and unemployment. From the employee's perspective, your payslip shows only income tax. The allmรคn pensionsavgift (7%) technically passes through your paycheck but you receive an equal tax credit, so the net cost to you is zero.

What is the grundavdrag?

The grundavdrag is a basic personal deduction that reduces taxable income. It's around SEK 36,000โ€“40,000 for most employed people, but the formula is income-dependent: it's highest for moderate incomes and lower for very high earners. This calculator uses SEK 36,000 as a representative value.

What is the jobskatteavdrag?

The jobskatteavdrag (job income deduction) is a tax credit for people with employment income. It can reduce income tax by up to SEK 35,000 for lower earners, and phases out for higher incomes. This calculator doesn't model it, so the taxes shown are slightly overstated, particularly for earners below SEK 500,000.
